See allHow to Play
Mini Go is an 81-point board played to the last point. Stones are placed one at a time and any enemy group with no liberties left is captured and removed. There is no passing and no resignation: the board fills, and whoever has more stones on it at the end wins.
Controls
- Place — Tap an empty intersection
- Mode — Buttons switch between vs CPU and two players
- Difficulty — Easy, medium or hard for the CPU
Tips & Tricks
- 1The score is stone count, not territory: when all 81 points are filled, black and white stones are counted and the larger count wins. Every stone you place is a point, and every stone captured is a point denied — capturing is worth two.
- 2There is no passing, so the game cannot end early and every empty point will be filled. That makes the last few points on the board worth exactly as much as the first, and makes wasting a move on a dead point costlier than usual.
- 3The hard CPU scores each candidate move as ten times the stones it captures plus its own liberties, so it takes a capture whenever one is available and otherwise plays for breathing room. Walking into an atari against it is a straight loss of stones.
- 4A group with one liberty left can be saved by extending it, but the extension has to add liberties rather than merely move the problem. On a board this small, a group of four or more is usually worth more than the two moves it takes to run.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the game scored?
By stones on the board once all 81 points are filled — no territory, no komi, no captures counted separately. You win on a tie, since the comparison is black greater than or equal to white.
Is there a pass?
No. The component has no pass and no resign: play continues until every point is occupied, which is why a 9x9 board here is a fill-the-board game rather than a territory game.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Intersections are tapped directly on the canvas and the nine-by-nine grid leaves about 44 pixels a cell, which is a comfortable target.
