How to Play

Chess is the ultimate strategy game, played for centuries by millions worldwide. Two players compete to checkmate the opponent's king using six different types of pieces, each with unique movement patterns.

The game is played on an 8x8 board with alternating light and dark squares. Each player starts with 16 pieces: 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, and 8 Pawns. White always moves first.

The objective is to place your opponent's king in "checkmate" - a position where the king is under attack and cannot escape. Along the way, you'll develop strategies for controlling the center, protecting your king through castling, and tactically capturing enemy pieces.

Controls

  • Click a piece - Select it
  • Click a highlighted square - Move the piece
  • The game enforces legal chess moves
  • Special moves: Castling, En Passant, and Promotion are automatically handled

Tips & Tricks

  • 1Control the center squares (d4, d5, e4, e5) early in the game
  • 2Develop your knights and bishops before moving the queen
  • 3Castle early to protect your king
  • 4Don't move the same piece twice in the opening
  • 5Think about your opponent's threats, not just your own plans

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best opening for beginners?

The Italian Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4) is excellent for learning. It develops pieces quickly and leads to open, tactical positions.

How do I castle?

Move your king two squares toward a rook. This can only be done if neither piece has moved, the squares between are empty, and your king isn't in check.

What's checkmate vs stalemate?

Checkmate: King is attacked and cannot escape (you win). Stalemate: King is not attacked but has no legal moves (draw).
